Lorna Goodison's third book of poetry. The persona of this collection is conscious of her spiritual mission. In the opening poem she declares: “I shall light a candle of understanding in thine heart”. Goodison states that “Heartease” refers to a place within a person that when located can make hardships easier. In this poem we see the use of the collective or communal voice “we”.. Goodison as poet speaks from within the condition of the people. Her personal voice and experience is merged with that of the people. Goodison’s poem ‘Heartease’ is focused on the metaphor of walking, a metaphor we have seen in several poems. The walk/ journey’s aim is either to find peace, to seek help, to work.(Baugh,1986)
