My Personal Language History
My Personal Language History
An I.L.E.A survey in 1987, revealed that school pupils in Inner London have at least 173 home languages other than English. This linguistic diversity is fully reflected in further and adult education classrooms. Most students in London have as their natural first variety of spoken language one of the 173 languages mentioned, s Caribbean Creole language, London language, or one of the other British regional varieties of language.
A key issue which teachers and students have to struggle with is the reality of language and power. This book aims to allow students to express their perceptions of their own linguistic situation with all their uncertainties, ambiguities and pain.
The book is intended to be read and enjoyed and to provoke discussion and writing amongst students in their classes and amongst teachers in an in-service training context.
